An Israeli man was arrested and charged with endangering the public related charges after being caught speeding 140 miles per hour on an Israeli roadway, according to police reports in Israel.

The man was arrested while speeding late night on Highway 6, at excessive speed. The Israeli Roadway Police unit stopped the vehicle, suspended the driver’s license, and he was taken into custody. The man was identified by police as a 40-year-old resident of Haifa.

Police said that they recorded the car driving at a speed of 140 mph, but the driver denied the charges, claiming that he traveled only at 80 miles per hour. However, the undercover police car at the scene was equipped with a special device that recorded the car’s speed at 140 mph.

The commander of the National Traffic Police in Carmel told an Israeli television news station that police increased patrol on highway 6 because motorists falsely believe that there is no speed limit in place.

The Israeli Supreme Court, recently ruled that anyone caught by police speeding above 125 mph can be arrested and charged with endangering the public. The police officer also said that in a similar speeding case recently, a judge ordered the defendant jailed for 6 months and prohibited the defendant from holding a driver’s license for 10 years.

“Driving at such high speeds is extremely dangerous. Police are doing the right thing by cracking down on offenders who make the roadway a dangerous place,” Morris Barger, 31, of Haifa, Israel told YourJewishnews.com after learning about the arrest.
