Satmar and Klausenburg yeshivas owe thousands of dollars in unpaid water bills, according to a report by the New York Daily News.
Klausenburg yeshiva owes nearly $200,000 after going years before applying for an exemption. Satmar yeshiva, is swimming in $89,000 in water bills, according to records.
Hasidic yeshivas are not the only ones not paying their water bills. Grace A Christian Church of Adventists owes $86,000 in water bills after the city rejected their application for undisclosed reasons.
According to the law, water to religious institutions is not free.
By law, religious institutions receive up to $242 of water per day, beyond that and up to $484 they get a 50 percent discount.
Now, many are calling to stop the free water policy altogether after it cost the city $22 million just last year.
