| Man assaulting police officer |
(Scroll down for video) A police commissioner has praised an officer, who refrained from using force when he was attacked while in uniform.
South African police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said that police officer Tiyiselani Shikwambana, 27, was driving in the city center around 4:30 pm with his wife.
When a car behind the officer flashed its light at him, the officer allowed the other car to pass. As the driver of the other car passed the officer another passenger threw a bottle at the uniformed officer.
Then, the men followed the officer for about 12 miles. The officer stopped at a gas station in Mankweng Johannesburg.
There, the three men got out of their car, smashed the windows of the police car and kicked in its doors.
The men were identified as Herdus van Jaarsveld, 27, and brothers Donald and Edwin Albreent, 21 and 24-years-old.
The officer entered the gas station where he gave his firearm to the cashier for safekeeping.
The three men, who are believed to have been drunk at the time, entered the store and assaulted the officer. They also damaged things at the gas station.
The men were arrested, and bail was set at only R500 (about $50).
The officer was praised by his supervisors. "Shikwambana was in a difficult position and had the right to protect himself, but he made a calculated decision to ensure the safety of those around him," Mulaudzi said.
