A Brooklyn, New York assemblyman was criticised for landing sweetheart jobs for his family members, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
The children of Brooklyn’s influential state legislator are quietly working part-time jobs for other two members of the State Assembly. Hikind admitted to helping them land the jobs.
Since September 2011, Yoni Hikind, 32, has earned $12,964 as a legislative aide for Assemblyman Peter Abbate Jr., Democrat, Bensonhurst, and Shmuel Hikind, 29, pocketed $10,470 as a community liaison for Assemblywoman Rhoda Jacobs, Democrat, Flatbush.
Their salaries were just enough for them to be entitled to a sweet perk, taxpayer-funded health care, according to their father.
"I help strangers, and I certainly do not discriminate against members of my own family," Dov Hikind, who represents the Borough Park section of Brooklyn, New York and was first elected in 1982, said.
"No member of the legislature, may participate in any decision to hire, promote, discipline or discharge a relative for any compensated position at, for or within any state agency, public authority or legislature," the State Legislative Ethics Commission ruled in February 2011.
