An Israeli man was arrested, charged and convicted of serious crimes after he decided to join the Syrian rebels, according to court proceedings in Israel.
Now, a court in central Israel has sentenced the man, to 30 months in prison.
Hichmat Masawary, 29, entered into Syria from Turkey and spent six days training with the Syrian rebels, according to the indictment filed in court.
The Syrian rebels asked Masawary for information on Israel's nuclear reactor and weapons used by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank, his attorney, Helal Jaber, said. The rebels also urged him to carry out a suicide bombing in Syria or Israel, but he refused, Jaber said.
Masawary told the court that he went to look for his younger brother, who entered Syria a month before to fight alongside the rebels against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. His brother's whereabouts are still unknown.
Israel has tried to avoid taking sides in Syria’s civil war.
