Robert Moulden |
A man was arrested, charged and convicted of hate crime related charges after being caught vandalizing Jewish gravestones with swastikas, according to court proceedings in New Zealand.
The Jewish community of Auckland, said that the gravestones which were vandalized in the Symonds Street cemetery will never be fully restored.
Robert Moulden was sentenced yesterday to 320 hours of community service, nine months supervision and ordered to pay a $3,000 fine in order to pay for damages.
The Auckland Jewish Council chairman, Geoff Levy, respects the judge's decision.
However, he said that the shadow of Nazi symbols painted on the tombs will remain because the stones is so old and the spray paint has sunk in.
He said that Jews will face the scars of seeing this every time they set foot in the cemetery.
