An Israeli ambassador who attempted to give a speech at a British university couldnt get a word through as he was shouted down by dozens of British students, according to press reports in Israel.
Protests against Israel on college campuses are growing rapidly, according to press reports. Dozens of students last week disrupted a speech by Israel's deputy ambassador in Britain, Alon Roth-Snir, at the University of Essex.
A speech which was scheduled to be given by Daniel Taub, the British ambassador, was also canceled at the University of Northern Ireland, for fear of riots.
Roth-Snir’s speech was scheduled after the invitation of the University of Essex Middle East club. But before the deputy ambassador began to speak, dozens of pro-Palestinian students began shouting in the conference room where the speech was to take place. They were eventually expelled by security personnel.
However, as Roth-Snir began speaking, about 30 students began shouting against Israel, calling it a criminal apartheid state and prevented the Israeli officer to get a word out.
Students ignored requests from staff and other students to allow the speech to continue. However, some pro-Palestinian students argued that Israel's position must be heard, even if they disagreed with it.
After numerous requests from several students for the speech to go ahead, the college moved Roth-Snir and some of the students into another room, but dozens of demonstrators violently banged on the doors and windows, and threatened to force their way inside. Authorities at the university, who feared chaos, decided to cancel the speech.
