(Scroll down for video) Hamas has warned collaborators of Israel that they have one month to come forward in exchange for leniency or face a brutal death, according to press reports in the Gaza Strip.
The leaders of Hamas in Gaza on Tuesday launched a month-long amnesty period for "collaborators" with Israel to surrender in exchange for leniency.
"We are announcing the opening of the door to repentance to all of those who have fallen into the traps set by the enemy’s intelligence services," Hamas Interior Ministry spokesperson Islam Shahwan told journalists.
"We urge them to return to their own people and their families," he said, noting that the offer of clemency was valid until next month.
Under Palestinian law, collaboration with Israel is punishable by death.
All execution orders must be approved by the Palestinian president before they can be carried out, but Hamas does not recognize the legitimacy of Mahmoud Abbas, whose four-year term ended in 2009.
After a deadly eight day confrontation with Israel in November, the Hamas government announced the creation of a committee to examine the "extrajudicial killings" of Palestinians accused of spying for Israel during the conflict.
In at least two incidents during the Israeli bombardment of the territory, seven people were shot dead after being accused of being collaborators.
The killings were carried out by Hamas militants from the Ezzedine al-Qassam.
Shahwan did not elaborate on the punishment a collaborator coming forward might get.
"This campaign is a message we send to the Zionist enemy's failure to assert its program of security and intelligence," he said.
