A New York teenager was arrested after she threw her stillborn baby down the garbage chute.
Ariel Devonish-Francis, 19, of the Bronx, New York delivered a stillborn baby and placed the fetus in the garbage chute of her building, authorities said.
The teenage mother was arrested after telling doctors that she disposed the fetus. Police were called and they recovered the body. Devonish-Francis was charged with illegal disposal of a corpse after she miscarried. After an autopsy was completed, the medical examiner determined it was a stillborn baby.
Devonish-Francis went to the Albert Einstein University Hospital which is located in the Morris Park neighborhood of the Bronx in New York City, for medical treatment. Devonish-Francis told hospital workers she threw the fetus down the chute in her building, authorities said. Police found the fetus in a bag in the basement of the building just before 6:00 pm on Saturday.
“I would tell people not to judge the teenager. She is young, she might have been scared when she saw the baby was not alive. She did not kill the baby or abuse it in any way,” Jasmin Taylor, 29, of the Bronx, New York told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about the unfortunate incident.
Neighbors set up a memorial outside the apartment building Sunday with teddy bears, a candle and flowers.
