| Burned mezuzahs in Williamsburg Brooklyn New York |
(Scroll down for video) A severe anti-semitic attack was reported in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York that occurred during the Holocaust Rememberance Day.
Vandals burned numerous mezuzahs, or a scroll place at every Jewish door, according to police reports in Brooklyn, New York.
At least 12 mezuzahs were burned at a Williamsburg apartment building Monday afternoon in a possible anti-Semitic hate crime on Holocaust Remembrance Day, police said.
The Hate Crimes Unit of the New York Police Department was investigating after the 12 mezuzahs were discovered burned at 85 Taylor Street, at the Taylor-Wythe housing complex, about 4:45 pm, police said.
Mezuzahs are Jewish ritual objects containing parchment inscribed with Hebrew Biblical verses and hung on the frame of doors.
“I was shocked to see the vandalism. This is a terrible hate crime against the Jewish comminuty especially on a day the Jewish world mourns the 6 million Jews that were killed during World War 2,” Menachem Fishman, 30, a resident of the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the incident.
"Nothing but hatred can explain why a person burns mezuzahs on Yom Hashoah, the day we remember the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust," Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said in a statement. "This is a disgusting act of prejudice affecting the essence of who we are as a city. Make no mistake: we will find those responsible."
