Man in duct tape

A man was arrested and charged with filing a false police report after making up a story about his kidnapping in order to avoid his girlfriend, according to a statement by the New York Police Department.

The man, who was identified by police as a 34-year-old from Brooklyn, was reported missing two weeks ago. Police said that the man faked his own kidnapping and has invented the whole story in order to avoid his girlfriend.

The New York Police Department said that Rahmel Wallace, also known as Rahmel Pettway, was arrested on February 28, and was charged with a misdemeanor count of filing a false report to police after admitting he faked his disappearance.

A police spokesperson said that Wallace, once arrested, admitted he had faked the kidnapping. He told police that he invented the story in order to explain his absence to his girlfriend.

Wallace was found with his hands, legs and mouth tied with duct tape a few blocks from his home in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York, early Thursday.

Police were skeptical of the kidnapping story after noticing a roll of duct tape hanging from his wrist.
"He is a total idiot," a police officer investigating the case, said. "It was a pathetic attempt to fool his girlfriend," he added.

Wallace first told police he could not remember what happened, then said he had been kidnapped by two men in a blue minivan on February 19.
