The stolen child |
A grandmother was arrested and charged with kidnapping after she allegedly stole a toddler from her daughter, according to police reports in Nigeria.
Cross River State Police said that they arrested a local woman on Sunday, after her daughter reported that she sold her daughter for $1,600.
Ndidi Nkwegu said that her mother sold her little daughter to a child trafficker, who was captured by police in neighboring Ebonyi.
The child trafficker was caught after he sold the child to a business person in Abuja.
"When I came home, I asked my mother about the whereabouts of my daughter, but she refused to tell me what happened. After I saw many new items around the house,I realized that she sold the child. Actually, my mother was never happy after she found out that I was pregnant. I had to call the police, and my mother is now in police custody,” the devastated mother said.
"After questioning, police discovered that she was the one who sold my toddler to a child trafficker," the mother also said.
Police said that the suspects were arrested on Thursday, in Ebonyi.
Police also said the suspects had confessed to the crime.
"The child trafficker is Blessing Nwilo, a teacher at the Sharon Middle School in Abakaliki. The buyer is Ngboro Chikezie of Ohaukwu, Ebonyi, an officer with the Ministry of Education," a police spokesperson said.
Police have returned the stolen child to her mother.
