An elderly Jewish woman is dead and her husband was seriously injured after a fire ripped through her house, according to rescue workers in California.
An early morning house fire in Benicia, took the life of Ellyn Levin, 82, and left her husband, Danny Levin, 82, hospitalized. The family is a member of Congregation B'nai Shalom in Walnut Creek.
Fire officials said that the fire started accidentally, and was first reported at 2:06 a.m., by a newspaper delivery person.
The fire caused $250,000 in damages. Firefighters broke into the house and pulled the couple from a back room.
They were both transported to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.
The couple was later transferred to the burn unit at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, where Ellyn Levin was pronounced dead. Danny Levin is still hospitalized and in serious condition.
"The Levins were a lovely couple, warm and very dedicated to the community," Rabbi Aderet Drucker of B'nai Shalom said.
