Men rioting in Jerusalem
By: Ryan Lee Hall

Nearly a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jews were arrested and will be charged with rioting after they allegedly lit garbage bins on fire, according to police reports in Israel.

Jerusalem Police clashed with hundreds of demonstrators in the ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim on Tuesday night, leading to the arrest of 11 people.

Protesters blocked the surrounding streets, tied themselves with rope, lit trash cans on fire and shouted slogans against the government.

The Haredi Jews are protesting after the arrest of a yeshiva student, who refused to report for military service.

When the demonstrators refused to obey orders to disperse, police used water cannons against them.

The mass demonstration, the second in two weeks, followed the sentencing of an 18-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jewish man to two weeks in military prison for refusing to show up for military service.

The young man refused to show up at the military recruitment office after his rabbi told him that it is better to die than to serve the country.
