Two police were arrested, charged and convicted of theft after they stole some cash from a black immigrant, according to court proceedings in Israel.
Now, the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court sentenced two police officers of the Border Guard to six months in prison for abusing their position to steal from a Sudanese immigrant.
However, the judge converted their sentence to community service.
The officers, Matan Nachmani and Pinchas Eliyahu Yonatanov, were also ordered to pay the victim 4,000 shekels ($1,150).
According to the indictment, the two were patrolling Neve Shaanan Street in Tel Aviv, when they noticed a Sudanese migrant walking alone on the street. They demanded his identification documents and then asked him to follow them to a nearby building.
Once inside the building he was ordered to stand facing the wall, and the police searched him.
During the search, police found some cash inside the victim’s wallet. Nachmani took $200 and 400 shekels ($113) and gave half to his partner Yonatanov.
After he was let go the man filed a complaint with the police.
