A man attempted to evade arrest after beating his wife until she fell unconscious by hiding in a sewer pit, according to police reports in Israel.

Carmiel Police said that they arrested a Dir al-Assad man, 45, on Thursday, after beating his 35-year-old wife.

The man attacked his wife during an argument that broke out between them. Police said that the suspect was arrested after being found hiding in a sewer pit.

Following a police complaint made by the victim, investigators arrived in the village and began looking for the suspect. After police searched his home he was found hiding in the backyard.

"The suspect fled from the scene with a knife, and was caught about two hours later. Special forces surrounded the house and the commander decided to break into the house in order to locate him. Cops found him hiding in a sewer pit," a police spokesperson said.

The suspect was arrested for questioning, and will be brought before a Magistrate’s Court judge for a bail hearing.

The woman, who lost consciousness during the attack, suffered injuries to her abdomen and chest. She was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
