(Scroll down for video) Police are looking for answers after a young boy grabbed an officer's gun and shot the officer.
When the California police officer was showing off his SWAT truck, most children were excited.
But while most children were focused on learning and listening to the officer, one boy was focused on getting his hands on the officer’s gun.
The police officer was shot with his own gun when the boy got his hands on the gun and pulled the trigger, shooting the officer in the leg.
The officer had his Glock .35 in his thigh holster. He was spending time with the children at a reading event called Reading Roundup in Lodi. He was at the reading roundup to show off his new SWAT truck, his vest and other equipment.
"A little boy was able to walk up to the officer and pull the trigger. There was no security outside. The gun worked as it was supposed to, and the officer was shot," Lt. Sierra Brucia said.
After the bullet hit the officer's leg he was treated in a hospital for a minor injury, and then, he was released. The department is investigating the incident in order to determine whether protocols or procedures should be changed so that such an incident does not happen again.
Officers will also speak to the boy and his parents to see exactly what went wrong. "We will talk to the child and his parents to know what the child’s intention may had been,” Brucia said. We want to know if it was accidental or intentional.
The officer who was shot, has been on the SWAT team for five years. He is already back in service.
