A Florida county chairwoman was slammed for using a derogatory anti-Semitic word during a meeting.
Now, the woman said that the incident was blown out of proportion.
Cheryl Sanders used the term “Jewing” during a discussion about the salary of one of the county officials.
An argument broke out when Howard Nabors was appointed as the head of the county roads department of the Florida Panhandle.
People began a discussion about whether Nabors deserved a salary of $45,000, which Sanders proposed. Nabors has 26 years experience in the county, but also lacks a high school graduation certificate. Nabors currently earns $37,200 with the highway department.
Some who were present argued that there was a need to raise salaries across the board.
"Today is not the day to do it," Sanders said at the meeting.
"We are here today discussing Nabors’ wage, we are not here for Jewing on someone's salary. I cannot believe that you would all put a man, who has worked here for 26 years, down all because he does not have a high school education," Sanders said.
Sanders was later condemned for using the “Jewing.” She later said that her statement was just blown out of proportion.
