Having snails crawl across your face may sound like a nightmare, but Japanese women are being offered the opportunity as a beauty treatment.
Starting Monday, women who want to get rid of dead skin, clean their pores or simply roll back their age, can undergo a snail facial.
Manami Takamura, an employee of the Tokyo-based beauty salon Ci:z Labo, explained the benefits of snails, as she placed three of the them on the face of a woman to prove it.
“Snail slime helps remove old cells, heal the skin after sunburn and hydrate. This way, you can have 100 percent pure snail directly on the skin,” Takamura said.
Snail is claimed to have anti-aging effects on human skin, and some cosmetics and perfumes include snails.
Ci:z Labo salon goes one step further in what it said is the first treatment of live snails in Japan.
As part of the treatment, customers get a 60-minute snail treatment that costs about $200.
The treatment begins with the face, which is washed before the snails are placed gently on the cheeks and forehead. The snails are then allowed to move around.
Then comes a series of massages with machines that use electrical impulses to ensure that snail mucus fully penetrates the skin.
"You can feel the snails moving on the face. At first it is surprising, but it is actually quite nice. My skin feels very soft and wet," one customer said.
