(Scroll down for video) Some Samuel Adams fans are angry after the latest advertisement of the company omitted a reference to God.
When Samuel Adams decided to use a line of the Declaration of Independence, it had no idea what it is getting into.
"All men are created equal," the actor in the advertisement for Samuel Adams, which began airing about three weeks ago, said. "They are endowed with certain inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," the advertisement continued.
Those familiar with the history of the United States, would recognize the lines as the text of the Declaration of Independence, but it's not an exact quote. This is how the original text reads: "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
The most obvious difference? The reference to the Creator or God. This change upset some fans of the Boston Beer Company, which produces Samuel Adams. Boston Beer Company, has defended the advertisement in a statement, saying that the omission adheres to a code developed by The Beer Institute trade group.
"We adhere to a code of advertising, established by the Beer Institute, a trade organization in the beer industry. Beer advertisements and marketing materials should not include religion or religious issues. We agree with that, and follow these guidelines and approach to our marketing campaigns with great responsibility," the company said.
