Police officers restoring order in Meah Shearim |
(Scroll down for video) Four men were arrested after throwing stones at Israeli police officers in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel, according to police reports in Israel.
It all began after an ultra-Orthodox Jewish soldier was attacked by dozens of men in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem. The soldier fled into a nearby building to seek temporary shelter and called police.
Once police arrived at the scene, a mob of radicalized ultra-Orthodox Jews began throwing stones at the police, who were trying to disperse the crowd. Four rioters were arrested for disorderly conduct.
Violence against ultra-Orthodox Jewish soldiers have increased sharply in recent weeks, possibly because of the public controversy over the new draft bill.
In response to the riots, the Israeli finance minister, Yair Lapid, said that continued incitement and violent attacks against ultra-Orthodox Jewish soldiers, as the grave incident that took place in Jerusalem tonight, is terrible and should be condemned by all.
Lapid announced an emergency meeting with the Israeli minister of internal security, Yitzhak Aharonovich, in order to see what the police can do to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
