North Carolina Police said that the judge was at the beach as part of his vacation with his family. He died yesterday after heroically jumping into the ocean in order to save a woman who was in distress.

The 54-year-old Mitchell McLean died trying to help a husband and wife struggling in the water.
The woman he was trying to save was identified as 55-year-old Mary Ann Galway. She later died at a hospital. Her husband, Edward John Galway, 59, was treated before being released on Wednesday afternoon.

Chief District Judge Mitchell McLean was pronounced dead after the tragic rescue attempt at Sunset Beach, on the southeastern coast of North Carolina.

McLean rushed into the water as Edward Galway tried to bring his wife to shore after she was caught in a strong rip current.
The judge, who had worked for 15 years as a public servant, was on vacation at the beach with his wife and children. He received CPR on shore after being pulled from the ocean, but he could not be revived.

“When the arrived back to shore, two of those people were in cardiac," County Emergency Management Director Anthony Marzano said.
"The other person was unconscious and unresponsive,” he said.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
