Police said that the will begin cracking down on arsonists who burn city property, according to police reports in Israel.
Residents of Elad complained that the smell of burning plastic, seeing garbage bins on fire and firefighters working to extinguish flames, have become routine over the past several weeks.
The city garbage cans are in close proximity of parked vehicles and so far, firefighters have managed to prevent the fires from destroying nearby cars.
Ronen Saban, the Elad Police commander, warned that an investigation has been launched in order to locate the serial arsonist or arsonists. No arrests have been made so far.
Over 40 garbage bins have so far been destroyed and the city said it will not purchase new garbage bins to replace those that have been burned, according to Remy Arazi, an Elad city official.
Arazi said that the garbage bins cost 1,000 shekels each and the city does not have funds to purchase new ones. As a result, garbage is piling up in the streets, which brought mosquitoes, flies, pests and diseases.
