(Scroll down for video) A prisoner was charged with assault related charges after he bit off a female jail guard’s ear, according to prison officials in Arizona.
Prison officials said that two prisoners rushed to the aid of the Arizona prison officer after the prisoner bit off her ear during a routine check inside a jail in Phoenix.
Rachel Harris, 22, a newly hired guard at the Maricopa County Detention Center, was savagely attacked by Bobby Ruiz when she entered the cell of the prisoner in the Lower Buckeye Jail.
"In the process of the assault, he her ear. We couldn’t locate the ear, which the prisoner may have swallowed," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.
Two inmates, Ricky Shillingford and Andrew Davis, apparently rushed to the aid of Harris. Ruiz fought with the prison officer until additional officers arrived on the scene.
"He had her in a stranglehold," Shillingford said. "I saw blood coming out of her ears," he added.
"I saw her on the floor, crunched over, and bent over," Davis added. "I took him off her. He punched me and went right back to her. Right is right and wrong is wrong. We made mistakes so we got here, but hey, if you can correct your mistakes, why not?" Davis said.
Ruiz, already convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, now faces charges of aggravated assault on an officer. According to prison officials, Ruiz has been placed in confinement, and he is only being fed bread and water.
"I just want to say thank you to those of you who helped me," Harris told a group of prisoners.
