Two little children were arrested after they decided to steal their grandmother’s car, take it out on a joyride and then crashing the car, according to police reports in Amsterdam.
When the Dutch police were called to investigate reports of a stolen car being taken for a joy ride, they were surprised to find that the suspects could barely see over the steering wheel.
Officers briefly detained the two brothers, five and seven-years-old, after they crashed their grandmother's car. The two took the car for a spin in the city of Bloemendael, Amsterdam.
The two caused considerable damage to the car after hitting a metal pole while cruising along a residential street earlier this week.
“The police saw a banged up car with the doors open and two young children standing beside it," police spokesperson Lenny Beijerbergen said.
“The seven-year-old boy told police that he had driven the car about a mile and a half, struck a metal pole and came to a standstill,” the police spokesperson said.
One police officer even uploaded a photo of the incident on Twitter before having second thoughts, and deleted it.
"The boys were taken to the police station, given a talk and made aware of what they have done," the police spokesperson added.
"Police officers then drove the children to their home. Fortunately, both boys were unharmed. This is really quite remarkable, I have never seen anything like it,” he said.
The 7-year-old driver remained defiant and later said: "At least I wore my seat belt and my brother was in the child seat.”
