(Scroll down for video) A police dog went beyond his call of duty by disarming an ax-wielding man and then held the man down for police.

The police dog in Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom, has been hailed a hero after it bravely snatched the ax from the hands of a violent drunk man.

Police officer Matt Rogers had his dog, Rossi, with him when he was responding to a call of a man threatening people with an ax.

When Rossi saw the suspect, who was identified as 36-year-old Adrian Dowdall, holding an ax, Rossi jumped eight feet in the air and grabbed the ax with his mouth. Then he threw it to the floor and held Dowdall with his teeth so that officer Rogers could make the arrest.

The police officer believes that Rossi, a 7-years-old Belgian shepherd, might have mistaken the ax for a toy. "Rossi is trained to detain offenders, not disarm them. I think he thought it was a toy. It happened in an instant. He went straight for it, spat it out and detained the man," officer Rogers said.

The suspect was sentenced to 160 days after pleading guilty to having a bladed article in a public place. Meanwhile, Rossi is set to retire in September and Rogers plans to adopt the dog.
