Rabbi Aryeh Leib Dudovitz |
A rabbi was arrested and charged with child sex abuse related charges after sexually abusing a child in Chicago, Illinois, according to court proceedings in Illinois.
The Chabad rabbi of West Rogers Park was arrested Saturday in the alleged sexual abuse of a teenager in 2006, even though prosecutors said authorities knew about the complaint back in 2006.
Larry L. Dudovitz also known as Rabbi Aryeh Leib Dudovitz, 45, of the 6400 block of North Albany, in Chicago, was charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, prosecutors said. Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil shot down a request by prosecutors seeking to hold the rabbi without bail, and instead ordered him held in lieu of $100,000. The judge also grilled prosecutors on the six year delay in the case.
"Now it's 2013, why wasn't he charged in 2006?" The judge asked prosecutors.
A prosecutor said the family of the victim, who was 15-years-old at the time, was originally unsure about whether they wanted to proceed with criminal charges.
Dudovitz is accused of sexually assaulting the victim while the child slept in his home in October 2006, according to court documents.
“Sexually assaulting a child is terrible crime, even more so when the suspect is a rabbi. As a rabbi, he should be held to a higher standard, and he should receive a harsh punishment. He should never be allowed to hold any public service position. He cannot be trusted around our children,” Joseph Goldstein, 45, of Chicago, Illinois told YourJewishNews.com after being asked to comment on Dudovitz’s charges.
