The California government is making condoms and lubricants available to all teenager’s including kids as young as 12-years-old.
The condoms can be ordered online for free and without their parents' consent.
The Condom Access Project was presented Tuesday by the Department of Public Health California, to help children as young as 12, order condoms and other products online, free of charge and without the consent of their parents.
The program will be available to teenagers between the ages of 12 to 19-years-old who live in areas with high Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and teen birth rates.
The free condoms, lubricants and educational materials can be ordered free of charge online through TeenSource.org. The site also has other information, resources and lists locations which perform STI testing.
Teenagers can place the order by themselves without parental consent, and they can receive up to ten free condoms per month along with the lubricant and an educational brochure. The items will be sent in a non-descriptive package for privacy.
The TeenSource website page named "Know Your Rights" makes a point of letting teens know they have the right to "confidential and affordable" birth control, emergency contraception, abortion services, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STD), pregnancy testing, prenatal care, and mental health services.
The website also emphasizes that California teenagers do not need permission from a parent or guardian to obtain various services, no matter what an adult might say.
“This is disturbing. They are encouraging kids to go behind their parents’ backs. Every parent wants the best for their child, they want their children to be safe and protected from STD’s and teen pregnancy. Why not encourage the children to discuss the issues with their parents rather than telling 12-year-olds to do as they please without consulting the one who loves them most? Susan Baker, 50, of San Francisco, California told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about the free condoms for 12-year-olds.
“You do not need anyone’s permission, including your parents or guardians, or your boyfriend or girlfriend. It’s your right to get these health services in complete privacy. The clinic or doctor cannot tell anyone why you were there, unless you say it’s okay,” the TeenSource website states.
