(Scroll down for video) A mother is jailed and held on $1 million bond after she killed her newborn baby.
The Arizona mother confessed to smothering her 6-day-old baby girl to death, according to police.
Nina Koistinen, is accused of covering her daughter's nose and mouth with her hand and held it until the baby was no longer alive. According to police, the 36-year-old mother of nine, allegedly killed the baby because she already had too many children.
Her husband, Bradley, discovered the unconscious girl at 6:45 am, and he took her to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead. Koistinen initially said that she had fallen asleep on her baby named Maya, during feeding, but the autopsy revealed possible signs of suffocation.
During questioning by police, the Phoenix mother allegedly admitted to killing her baby because she was jealous with the amount of time that her husband was spending with the newborn, and she already had too many children.
“Where is the father in all this? I was shocked and angered when I heard the father telling the court that his wife suffers from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. Why did he have so many children with a woman who is suffering from a host of different mental problems?” Christine Cooper, 55, of Phoenix, Arizona told YourJewishNews.com when asked what she thought about this inncident.
Child protective services has been to the family’s home before. Records show, that after a car crash, Koistinen said she wanted her children to go to heaven, some believed that Koistinen intentionally caused the accident.
At her first court appearance, Bradley Koistinen maintained that his wife is innocent. He noted that his wife suffers from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, but he claimed that "She has been the greatest mother. We've been married 15 years, and she never once hurt any of our kids," he said.
Koistinen is being held on $1 million bond.
