(Scroll down for video) Did you think that glow in the dark items are limited to children toys? Not anymore. Apparently, sheep can glow in the dark as well.
The first sheep in the world that can glow in the dark were born in Uruguay.
Scientists at the Uruguay Institute of Animal Reproduction modified the genes in nine sheep with a green fluorescent protein found in the jellyfish, Aequorea Victoria.
The result was sheep the glow in the dark, but are otherwise completely normal, according to scientists.
The first sheep was born in October 2012 and was immediately injected with the green protein.
Today, the sheep emit a bright green color when exposed to ultraviolet light.
The leader of the research team, Alejo Menchaca said that the sheep are healthy and behave normally, and they simply glow.
Menchaca said that the institute carried out the experiment to perfect the technique of glow in the dark.
Sheep are not the first animals that have been genetically modified to glow in the dark, despite the peculiar result, there is a serious side to these experiments. Scientists use the research to better understand human and animal diseases.
“I am now definitely paranoid of consuming sheep. What if I consume a piece of meat of a glow in the dark sheep? Will I start glowing in the dark as well? This is very scary. I don’t think scientists should play around with such experiments,” Tanya Palm, 39, of Las Cruces, New Mexico told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the glow in the dark sheep.
Who knows. One day this knowledge can lead to glow in the dark knitwear that will make your friends glow in the dark too.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
