A man was arrested and charged with assault related charges after punching a police dog because it bit his thigh, according to a statement by the police in New Jersey.
Many charges have been filed against the robbery suspect who allegedly struck the police dog that helped police in detaining him in northern New Jersey.
Clifton Police said that 22-year-old Angel Mendez ran from the police on Friday and was found shortly thereafter hiding under the porch of a house. Mendez allegedly hit the police dog while being arrested after biting Mendez on the upper thigh.
“The police went overboard with the charges, in my opinion. The man should not have been charged with assaulting a police dog because the dog bit him in his thigh, first. I think the dog should be charged with assault,” Eileen Kling, 21, of Freehold, New Jersey told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the assault charges against Mendez.
Mendez faces four counts of theft.
He is also charged with aggravated assault of a police dog, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. Police said that Mendez ripped off the heads of two birds he stole from a local resident.
