Bacon and cheese sandwich |
A Jewish woman was left devastated after buying a sandwich at Tesco that was labeled as meatless but was packed with pork, according to press reports in the United Kingdom.
The Jewish woman from Manchester was angry after discovering that her Tesco lunch was loaded with bacon.
Dani Cohen, 37, thought she had bought a small $1.00 mozzarella and tomato sandwich for lunch during work, but realized that it was loaded with bacon after she had taken a bite. "I realized that there was meat and no sign of any tomatoes," she said. "I felt sick and could not eat the rest of my lunch," she added.
Cohen, of Prestwich, complained at the Stretford Tesco branch last month and received a full refund. She also was offered $15 in compensation for her inconvenience at the deli counter.
Cohen, who works in customer services, said she was really pissed off with them.
"I bought what I thought was a cheese and tomato sandwich in the sale section and it was so packed that I could not see what was inside the package," she said.
Cohen, who does not keep kosher, said: "I'm not the most religious person, but certainly would not eat any pork product."
“I feel bad for this woman. Any Jew who is careful to eat kosher or not to eat any pork product would be devastated. Tesco and other retailers must be made aware of the importance of Jewish kosher dietary laws and label their products correctly,” Anna Hammerstein, 57, of Manchester, England told YourJewishNews.com.
A Tesco spokesman said: "We take issues like this very seriously, and have conducted a thorough investigation.
The product has been incorrectly labeled and we have taken steps to ensure that the products are clearly labeled."
