(Scroll down for video) Religious freedom activists are angry after signs went up in a Haredi neighborhood in Petah Tikva that instruct men and women to use separate streets, according to a report on Channel 2 News.

The signs went up in preparation of a Simchat Beit Hashoeva Sukkot event scheduled to take place on Thursday evening. The signs instruct men and women to enter the facility via separate streets. Mayor Yoaz and Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino, are scheduled to take part in the event.

The large posters hung around the city tell men to use Salant and Herzel streets, while women are asked to use Achad Haum and Chafetz Chaim streets.

City officials said that the event is for the Haredi public in Petah Tikva.

Although the law prohibits gender segregation in public, the municipality of Petah Tikva and the Israel Police issued permits for the event.

"This sex segregation is not acceptable," Oron Meiri, a candidate for city council, said.

The Petah Tikva Municipality said in a statement that the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community has no right to dictate who can use a public street, and that all public streets are open for men and women alike.
