Until she was married, a woman thought she was adopted because her biological mother told her so.
A mother in China lied to her daughter for more than a decade, telling her that she was not her biological mother so that her daughter doesn't grow up spoiled.
The mother, who is known as Shen, of Shenyang, married into a wealthy family and wanted her daughter to grow up to be a responsible adult rather than a spoiled rich kid.
When her daughter Cheng Cheng was 13-years-old, the mother became concerned that she was becoming spoiled and arrogant, because she was born into a wealthy family.
The mother decided to take dramatic steps to ensure her daughter becomes a productive human being rather than sitting around and living off of her family's wealth.
The woman told her daughter that she was adopted and will be supported until she is an adult, and at that time she will have to take care of herself.
At first, the girl did not believe her mother’s story of her being adopted, when she asked questions she was told her biological mother had died many years ago.
The mother said that since being told that she was adopted, her daughter began to study more and her grades improved. She also became "sensitive and obedient."
Cheng Cheng decided to attend a boarding school and she did well for herself.
After graduating, she was accepted in Dalian Jiaotong University in Liaoning, China, with several scholarships.
She found a good job at a software company in Shanghai.
After her daughter had a good job and got married, Shen then revealed to her daughter that she had lied about the adoption, and that she was her biological mother.
The mother said that she does not regret telling her daughter the lie.
"My daughter is beautiful, and she has a good job. She makes more than 6,000 yuan ($1050) each month and is now married to a good man," Shen said.
Shen faced backlash and criticism from many people including psychologists with many saying that her daughter may suffer severe psychological effects from the ordeal.
