(Scroll down for video) A Canadian social worker was arrested in Bogota, Colombia, after trying to smuggle drugs in her pregnancy bump.
Police said that a woman has been arrested after trying to smuggle drugs inside a latex pregnant belly.
Leah Tabitha Ritchie, 28, was trying to board a flight from Colombia to Canada. As she passed through security, she was asked by a border patrol agent how advanced she was in her pregnancy.
The 28-year-old responded aggressively, and she seemed to be uncomfortable with the question, raising the officer’s suspicion.
She said she was seven months pregnant, raising further suspicion of the official, who in turn went to search her.
The female officer gently touched her stomach and realized that the woman’s stomach was too hard and too cold. She was ordered to uncover her belly. That’s when police found a the fake latex pregnancy bump with two sealed bags containing 5 pounds of cocaine hidden inside.
She was arrested at the Bogota International Airport while trying to board a flight to Toronto.
Ritchie was charged with drug trafficking, among other charges. She is facing between five and eight years in prison.
The drugs have a street value of about $60 thousand, Colombian police said.
Bogota officials said that 874 foreigners are currently detained in the country's prisons, mostly for drug trafficking.
