Several people were arrested after they took part in a fake kidnapping prank as part of a birthday celebration, according to officials in the United Kingdom.

Two British women have been arrested in Portugal after being involved in a fake kidnapping as part of a stunt to celebrate a 40th birthday.

Police were called to the Restauradores Square in Lisbon, after receiving several calls from alarmed passerby, who thought they were witnessing a real kidnapping.

The women, who have not been named, got into a white van with two men, one of whom was hooded, before speeding away, in the afternoon on Sunday.

Police rushed to the spot and chased after the van before catching up with the vehicle. They arrested two British women along with three men and another woman.

The two women were among a group of nine women aged between 27 and 40, who were on a trip to celebrate the 40th birthday when they participated in the prank, which was organized by a local entertainment company.

The incident was recorded by one of the participants. The camera was seized by investigators along with the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "We are aware of the arrest of two British nationals in Portugal. We are providing consular assistance."
