Two people were arrested and charged with smuggling related charges after police found 1,500 pounds of meat inside their car trunk, according to police reports in Israel.
Police said that the suspects made their way to Highway 1, which is the main Jerusalem-Tel Aviv roadway, before being caught.
According to the initial investigation, the suspects allegedly purchased the meat in Brazil and then flew with the meat to Jordan. From Jordan, the meat was smuggled into the Palestinian controlled territories. The suspects revealed that the meat was to be sold in Tel Aviv.
"When we stopped the vehicle, we decided to conduct a thorough search of the car. We opened the trunk and were surprised to find 1,500 pounds of smuggled meat without any type of refrigeration," a police officer on the scene said. Meat smuggled from the Palestinian controlled territories into Israel is considered dangerous, but is becoming a common occurrence recently.
The meat was intended to be sold in supermarkets across the country, which could have led to mass injuries.
