Protest on Jerusalem bridge |
(Scroll down for video) 5 activists were arrested today in Jerusalem after protesting Obama’s arrival to the region, according to police reports in Israel.
Five Greenpeace activists chained themselves to the Jerusalem bridge Thursday while demanding that U.S. President Barack Obama stop exploratory drilling in the Arctic.
The activists were wearing white coats and yellow helmets, while climbing the metal wires extending along a busy intersection at the entrance to the city.
"Obama: Stop drilling in the Arctic," a sign in Hebrew deployed by the protesters on the structure, which stands at 119 meters or 390 feet high in the skyline of Jerusalem, read.
The protest came a day after Obama began his first official visit to Israel since he was elected president four years ago.
Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the bridge has 66 chains that are connected to a single towering mast in a design similar to the harp of Biblical King David.
It is located at the western entrance of the city, on the main road leading out to Tel Aviv.
There are 5,000 police on duty in Jerusalem during the days of the presidential visit, but the officers seemed unable to stop the high-profile move. In the video below you can see the Jerusalem bridge.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
