(Scroll down for video) A woman received a preloaded $100 train card after she gave birth inside a train station, according to officials of the Metro Transit in Washington DC.
The baby was delivered on the platform of the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station Thursday morning.
Metro Transit Police first tweeted the event around 10:48 am, but the baby was born around 10:30 am.
Metro spokesperson Dan Stessel said that the 23-year-old woman went into labor aboard a Green Line train heading toward Greenbelt, Maryland. An emergency medical technician, who was off duty at the time, helped the woman get off the train.
Police and station managers responded when someone called police, but the baby could not wait, and EMT delivered the child at the time.
Both mother and son were taken to George Washington University Hospital, and both appear to be in good health, according to the DC Fire Department.
A hospital spokesperson said the boy, weighing 8 pounds, 5 ounces, has been named Amir Mason.
Around 3:00 pm, Metro officials tweeted a photo of a letter written by the Metro General Manager Richard Sarles to the baby's mother. It reads:
"Dear Shavonnte Taylor,
Congratulations on the birth of your child! I am sure that the delivery was not exactly as you had imagined, but I hope that our employees and customers, who assisted you were a source of support and comfort.
Please accept our SmarTrip card with preloaded $100 Metro fare as our gift."
