Women ordered to back of bus illustration |
Two ultra-Orthodox Jews were arrested and charged with violating women’s rights related charges after they ordered a woman to the back of the bus, according to police reports in Israel.
Jerusalem Police said that at around 9:00 am police officers arrested two ultra-Orthodox Jews after a female passenger boarded a public bus and they asked her to go to back. The bus was an Egged bus operating in Jerusalem.
The incident occurred on the 59 bus route traveling through the Neve Yaakov neighborhood, while passing by Bar Ilan Street. The two men asked the passenger to move to the back because they erroneously believed that the bus was a “Mehadrin” line. Some ultra-Orthodox Jews believe there are public buses that forcibly segregate between men and women.
The female passenger immediately called police, who arrived at the scene and arrested the two suspects.
