(Scroll down for video) A man was left broken-hearted after discovering that city officials have accidentally demolished his home in Texas.

The city of Fort Worth is investigating why demolition crews razed the wrong house.

The family home with three bedrooms near Lake Worth was accidentally demolished by city crews on Friday.
David Underwood recently drove by the empty house that belonged to a relative, when his wife realized that the house was not there.
"We looked up and indeed it was gone," Underwood said.

Underwood said he had personal items inside the demolished house, including antiques. The house had belonged to his family for decades.

A neighbor said that a nearby house was set to be demolished in January. The neighbor allegedly tried to alert local authorities when the crew started tearing down the wrong house.

The city of Fort Worth confirmed Monday the accidental demolition in a statement.

"The demolition crew wrongly went to the property on Watercress Drive. The crew should have demolished 9708 Watercress Drive, but the property that was demolished was an empty structure located at 9716 Watercress Drive," the city’s Code Compliance Department said in a statement.
