The Women of the Wall |
(Scroll down for video) Two radicalized ultra-Orthodox Jews were arrested at the Western Wall after the group threw stones and eggs at a group of women who came to pray at the Western Wall, according to police reports in Israel.
Israel Police spokesperson Shmulik Ben Ruby said that two people, a man and a woman, were arrested after the man threw a bottle at the group of women, and the woman tried to block members of the women’s prayer group from entering the Western Wall area.
"Around six thousand young girls were at the Western Wall and had taken it over," Ben Ruby said. “It was not safe to allow the group of women to enter the women’s section of the Western Wall,” he also said. Ben Ruby also said that stones were thrown at the women.
Ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters also threw eggs at the women. At one point, a man had to be torn away from the ultra-Orthodox Jews by police, after he was beaten by them. The man had been praying along with the Women of the Wall with a yarmulke. The man also seemed to have side curls.
Rabbi Sari Laufer of the Rodeph Sholom synagogue in New York, who is six months pregnant, was hit by an egg on her neck. "It is very sad that this is happening on the first of Av," she said. During the month of Av, both the first and second temples were destroyed.
Lesley Sachs, the executive director of the Women of the Wall, said she was furious after the group was not allowed inside the women’s section of the Western Wall. She added that at least 350 people participated in the service this morning.
The ultra-Orthodox Jews drowned out the prayer service with whistles and with shouting.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
