A family was devastated after their dead daughter's friend stole their daughter’s phone during the shiva mourning period and deleted all her photos, according to police reports in Israel.
Israel Police said that an 18-year-old Rosh HaAyin woman was arrested Sunday on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone belonging to her friend, Noy Cohen, who collapsed and died in a pool last month.
Noy Cohen was just two weeks away from graduating high school and she decided to go for a swim at the kibbutz pool. After leaving the pool, Cohen began to feel sick. She was rushed to the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva. She fell into a coma in the intensive care unit.
Doctors told the family that the Cohen was suffering from severe bleeding in the brain. That is when her parents decided to take her off life support and donate her organs.
During the shiva mourning period, many came to console the family, including Noy’s friends. Cohen's parents realized that their deceased daughter’s iPhone 5 went missing from her room. The parents filed a police complaint. During the investigation, police learned that the phone contained personal photos of Noy, taken immediately before she died.
Police began investigating all those who came to the home during the shiva mourning period.
Police eventually arrived at the suspect's home, where they found the stolen phone.
Police also found additional stolen items. The police have also decided to investigate the girl's parents, after it became clear that they were aware of the actions of their daughter. The woman and her parents were arrested.
Police were shocked to discover that the suspect erased all the photos from her dead friend's phone. The police are working to restore the removed material.
