(Scroll down for video) Radical Islamists turned up their campaign against education by setting a school dormitory on fire, killing at thirty, according to police reports in Nigeria.
Nigeria Police said that Islamic radicals attacked the dormitory before dawn Saturday, spraying the building with fuel and setting it on fire while students slept. At least 30 people died in the deadliest attack yet against schools in northeast Nigeria.
Authorities blame the violence on Boko Haram, a radical group. The radicals have been behind a series of recent attacks on schools in the region, including one in which gunmen opened fire on children taking exams in a classroom.
"We were sleeping when we heard shots. When I woke up, someone was pointing a gun at me," Musa Hassan, 15, said.
He put up his arm in defense, and suffered from a gunshot wound to his hand. His life was saved after the radicals decided to flee from the scene.
Hassan said that the gunmen came armed with cans of fuel used to torch the school administrative building and one of the dormitory.
"They burned children alive," he said.
On Saturday, at the Potiskum General Hospital morgue, which is a few miles from the scene of the attack, parents were screaming in anguish trying to identify the victims. Some parents do not know if their children survived or died.
Boko Haram Islamist militants and separatist groups have killed more than 1,600 civilians in suicide and other attacks since 2010.
The attack on Saturday killed 29 students and English teacher Mohammed Musa, who was shot in the chest, according to another professor, Ibrahim Abdu. Police officers who arrived after the gunmen left and transported the bodies to the hospital confirmed at least 30 people were killed.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
