A leader of a prestigious Jewish university in New York City quit after numerous allegations of child sex abuse plagued the yeshiva over the past several years, according to a statement released by Rabbi Norman Lamm.
The chancellor said that he was wrong in how he handled allegations of child sexual abuse in his high school dating back many years.
Rabbi Norman Lamm said in a letter announcing his retirement from Yeshiva University this week that his response to the allegations was very weak. Lamm is stepping down after decades in the college in the middle of an ongoing investigation into allegations of abuse against students.
The university said that Lamm’s decision to retire was based on an agreement reached three years ago.
Attorney Kevin Mulhearn, who represent 22 men claiming to have been sexually and physically assaulted by administrators and faculty at Yeshiva University High School from 1971 to 1989, said that the victims won't back down.
Mulhearn said that the plaintiffs came to report the abuse to Lamm over the years, but the school did nothing.
