Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum has been arrested at his home this morning by Quebec's anti-corruption police unit.
Police spokesperson Anne-Frederick Laurence said that Applebaum was arrested at his home at 6:00 am.
She said all other details, including charges, would be released at a press conference later today at the offices of the Sûreté du Québec.
Applebaum, 50, was arrested by officers from the unit combating corruption called l’unite permanente anticorruption or UPAC.
Two other people were arrested this morning in the case. Laurence identified them as Jean Yves Bisson and Saulie Zajdel, both of whom had previously worked in the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace, which Applebaum had represented as a councilor or mayor since 1994.
The three were arrested by the Sûreté du Québec.
Zajdel, a longtime council member in Notre-Dame-de-Grace, was a Conservative Party candidate for the federal riding of Mount Royal in the last election. Prime Minister Stephen Harper campaigned for him in an appearance at the Ben Weider Jewish Community Center.
