The homeless woman from Chicago, who has been arrested 396 times in the last 35 years, has been ordered by a judge to obtain mental health services and help for her substance abuse problems.
Shermain Miles, 51, appeared in Cook County court on Monday, after being accused of attacking a city council member. She pleaded guilty to trespassing and public intoxication in unrelated cases.
Judge Peggy Chiampas sentenced Miles to time served after she agreed to undergo a mental health evaluation and follow-up treatment. Miles has been held at the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln, 65 miles west of Champaign, since December for violating the terms of her probation.
"All of us are trying to get you the help you need, perhaps for the first time in your life, right?" Judge Chiampas told Miles. "You have to reach out and grab all our hands too," the judge added.
Miles, who has dozens of convictions for crimes and misdemeanors, thanked the judge for her help.
Miles has been arrested 65 times for disorderly conduct and has used at least 83 different names.
She is well-known among business people and residents in several neighborhoods of North Side, Illinois. One florist called police on the woman 25 times last summer.
