(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested and charged after throwing her newborn baby into the trash at her office building, according to a statement released by police in Virginia.
“The newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a dumpster as common household trash,” a judge in Richmond, Virginia was told. “She died of asphyxiation,” prosecutors said at a bail hearing.
Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Janae Craddock also told a judge that the mother, Shavaughn Robinson, 27, told police: "I do not want people to think I killed that baby for nothing."
It was unclear what Robinson meant by her comment.
In today's hearing, Craddock asked that Robinson be held without bail, arguing that she gave birth to the baby last week in a bathroom in an office building on Monument Avenue and left the child in a plastic trash bag in a dumpster behind the building.
Craddock also said that Robinson, who is charged with felony concealment of a corpse, faces additional charges and is considered a flight risk. Police have labeled the child's death as a homicide.
Craddock said Robinson gave birth Tuesday in a bathroom at the Lee Medical Building, where she worked as a massage therapist. Craddock said Robinson was seen wiping blood off a bathroom stall.
"Her only concern was to clean up her mess," Craddock said.
Robinson also told a cleaning woman that she was having stomach problems, a janitor, who works in the building, told police.
Robinson put her baby in a trash can in the bathroom, put some paper towels on top, tied the garbage bag shut and left it in the dumpster, Craddock said.
A janitor found the body at night and called police.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
