Ultra-Orthodox Jews clashing with Israeli police illustration |
Ultra-Orthodox Jewish modesty patrol stoned several ultra-Orthodox Jewish women, who were driving a car in Jerusalem, Israel, according to a statement released by police in Israel. The patrol also stoned police officers who responded to the scene.
The group of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men also attacked a police vehicle in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Yisrael on Thursday, breaking the front windshield and rear window.
Police were called to the scene after the "modesty patrol" in the neighborhood attacked a car in which a group of ultra-Orthodox Jewish women were traveling, saying they were dressed immodestly.
Several ultra-Orthodox Jewish men smashed the car windows, punctured the tires and poured fish oil on it.
After the attack on the police car, another group of police arrived and dispersed the rioters.
Modesty patrols are known to operate in ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in order to enforce, sometimes violently, a strict interpretation of Jewish views on modesty.
