(Scroll down for video) A father was arrested after he abandoned his son and fled the scene of an accident.

The father is accused of a hit-and-run and leaving his 4-year-old son lying in the road while bleeding in San Diego, California.

40-year-old Angelo Fabiani Arroyo of California, was arrested after police asked the public for help locate the suspect. Arroyo spent a pleasant day with his friends at a cookout on the beach. “There was some drinking, but I did not drink,” Arroyo said.

On his way home, he allegedly lost control of his Nissan, which was pulling a small trailer carrying his jet ski, which he used earlier that day, and crashed into a fence and palm tree, before ending up on the side, on top of a concrete retaining wall.

Arroyo tried to free his son from his child safety seat, when the boy accidentally fell 10 feet onto a concrete sidewalk. At that point, Arroyo ran for fear that he killed his son.

In an interview from prison, Arroyo said that he abandoned the child because he thought the child was dead. "Just seeing him laying there like that, I froze. I thought he was dead. I thought I killed him," Arroyo said. "I just started walking. I did not want to hear the ambulances. I did not want to see people," he added.

The child is being treated at a children's hospital in the town. Arroyo, reportedly has three DUI arrests. He spent a year in prison for the last one. He recently got his licence back.

Arroyo has been charged with hit-and-run with injury and child endangerment.
